Ten favorite movies to inspire the adventurer and environmental advocate in all of us!

Christmas and holidays are a wonderful time relax, dream, talk with friends and family and - plan some future adventures! I’m a big movie fan and I want to share - ten favorites which have inspired the adventurer, traveler and environmental advocate in me.

So, in order of recent to older - please enjoy this list and some favourite films new and old.

14 Peaks 2021

“If you give up in the mountains, you die”. ‘Nims’ Nimsdai Purja embarks on a seemingly impossible quest to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in seven months. I feel this movie will change the mountaineering tour guide industry by exemplifying Nepalese climbers who have led the way for over a hundred years and have found a powerful voice in this incredible accomplishment. Seaspiracy. 2020

A bold and daring film. It will upset some viewers and it’s heavy. But a powerful testament to a brave filmmaker and a stunning expose of what we are doing to our oceans. Trailer

Our Planet Series - BBC 2019

Netflix’s most watched documentary ever. This series will bring tears of awe and is a remarkable story of the last century of our planet’s biodiversity. An intimate and hopeful plea for society and industry change. Trailer

Edie - 2018

Edie, an 83 year old woman, recently lost her husband, George and her relationship with her daughter is going south. As her daughter plans to move her mother to a retirement home, Edie decides to embark on the adventure of a lifetime - hiking a mountain called ‘Suilven’ in the Scottish Highlands. Trailer

Wild
- 2014

I wonder if Cheryl Strayed hasn’t caused a generation of Americans and internationals to take a year off work/school and go on the Pacific Crest Trail - or other long distance walks. As someone with hiking experience, I was amazed by her book, story and this film. I don’t think she’d ever backpacked before and walked over a thousand miles on the PCT! Trailer

The Way - 2013
This is a homemade film by a 33 year old Australian called Mark who walked the Way of St James - 500 miles from France and across Northern Spain. He’s humble, a non expert and tells a beautiful story of pilgrimage. He talks funny, with an aussie accent. No subtitles needed though!

The National Parks - Ken Burns & PBS - 2009
The words of a friend and Yosemite Ranger Shelton Johnson are a powerful opening to this remarkable series about ‘America’s Best Idea’ The National Parks. Sit back on the couch for a tour of America’s wild places - no van required! Trailer

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 2008
Had to put a rom-com in here. Great scenery, Waikiki surf lessons and beautiful views of Oahu - If you want to come visit, learn to surf then cliff jump off that edge (it’s only 35 feet and called Laie Point) - you know who to call! If you watch it, you might have to come to Hawaii and if you do you’ll be blown away by the nature! Trailer

Erin Brockovich - 2000

A "cross-over" environmental film. Did anyone realize they were watching a piece of environmental advocacy? In Hinkley, California where Brockovich, a single mom working as a legal clerk, brought Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to justice for contaminating groundwater with Hexavalent chromium. Think we need riches or higher education to change the environment for the better. She had neither. Such an inspiring film. Trailer

Fern Gully - 1992

A kids movie -but a great story about the archetypal struggle between man’s between our hunger for resources and the fragile rain forest. And this time - Nature wins! Trailer
